A total of 56 youth including female adolescents and women have been presented with sewing machines after undergoing a six-month training programme in Bolgatanga ran by the Asongtaba Cottage Industries in collaboration with the National Youth Employment Programme [NYEP]. Each beneficiary received a brand new sewing machine worth 150.oo Ghana Cedis.

The beneficiaries were mainly taken through sewing and dressmaking techniques. The aim of the training programme which is a partnership between the NYEP and Asongtaba Cottage Industries is that, having been groomed by master craftsmen in the dressmaking industry, the grandaunts will in turn establish their own shops and also train other youth to create more jobs.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Edward Ayiriba Ayagle who graced the occasion challenged the beneficiaries to drop any lazy attitudes towards their work. He said for them to make any meaningful gains from their training, they have to work hard. He pledged that government will continue to partner private enterprises who have the ability to help create jobs for the country’s youth.

The Upper East Regional Coordinator of the NYEP, Mr. James Kojo Kupanamo noted that the dressmaking programme and others like it, will ease the financial burden on the NYEP as the trainees are supported to start their own enterprises and to stand on their own after their graduation. Mr. Kupanamo warned that any beneficiary who sells out her sewing machine and other tools will be made to refund the cost to the NYEP. He said such a practice will defeat the purpose of the programme.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator of Asongtaba Cottage Industries in charge of the Northern sector, Mr. Faisal Webre Keliou said the youth of Ghana have been identified by the NYEP as a massive resource which must be transformed to facilitate the economic development of the country adding that this informed the partnership between his outfit and the NYEP.

Mr. Keliou revealed that four stages are relevant in the implementation of the training project including the training, the set-up, the recovery and the microfinance stages. He said with the official handing over of certificates, the sewing machines and basic tools to the 56 beneficiaries, the programme has laid the foundation stone on which many more youth will benefit.

According to the monitoring and evaluation coordinator, instead of 7,000 trainees targeted nationwide, the programme ended up training 7,959 which represents about 13 per cent more than the initial target. He disclosed that a total of 800 sewing machines with corresponding basic tools have been allocated to the Upper East region for distribution to beneficiaries under the dressmaking training programme.
