GHANA RED CROSS SOCIETY EULOGISES KOFI ANNAN 14th September, 2018
Management
of the Ghana Red Cross Society [GRCS] in the Upper East Region, has formally
sent its message of condolence to the Government of Ghana and the family of
late United Nations Secretary-General [SG], Kofi Atta Annan following his
interment last Thursday.
In
a brief meeting with the Acting Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Adongo
Fuseini, the Board Chairman of the Upper East branch of the GRCS, H.E
Ambassador Donald Adabere eulogised the late Kofi Annan saying, he was a
peculiar humanitarian who always felt and cared for the world’s vulnerable and
marginalised, especially women and children. He recalled that, late Kofi Annan
once paid a visit to the Sirigu Women Organisation for Pottery and Art [SWOPA]
which was occasioned by a simple question posed to Mr. Annan abroad.
Mr.
Adabere, also described Mr. Annan’s passing as a “huge loss to Africa and an
irreplaceable loss to Ghana as he was a global icon who readily gained respect
and important recognition for Ghana anywhere he visited around the world”.
He
noted that when people die, they often live behind memories and legacies and
appealed to the Government of Ghana to take steps to immortalise the name of
Mr. Annan through the erection his monuments and establishment of annual
memorial lectures and other befitting events to constantly remind Ghana and the
world of Mr. Annan’s great exploits. He also charged the current crop of
Ghanaian leaders to emulate the shining example of the late UN-SG.
Acting
Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Adongo Fuseini after listening to the
Red Cross team, said the whole of Ghana was thrown into shock after learning of
Mr. Annan’s death on 18th August, 2018. He added that though he had retired
from the UN years ago, he was still playing vital roles in the world’s scheme
of affairs and should have lived a little longer. He said the late Annan was a big source of
inspiration for many, especially Africans having risen through the ranks to
serve in the UN’s top job as SG.
Hon.
Fuseini noted that late Mr. Annan was very instrumental in brokering peace in
many war-torn nations of the world during his reign as the UN’s SG and that,
such selfless efforts won the late Ghanaian International Civil Servant, the
Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 which also jointly bestowed on the United Nations.
While he wished the late Annan a peaceful rest with God, he observed that he
had left behind a very good name that his descendants and fellow countrymen
will continue to benefit from.
Hon.
Fuseini who is also the Member of Parliament for the Zebila Constituency, urged
the Red Cross to continue with its volunteer-spirited works which often take
some critical services to the rural people as well as whip up communal
mobilisation for the betterment of rural lives. He disclosed that the Upper
East Regional Coordinating Council had received a truck-load of assorted relief
items earmarked for distribution to some flood-stricken communities across the
region, following the torrential rains in recent times coupled with the
spillage of Burkina Faso’s Bagre Dam. He called on the Ghana Red Cross Society
to do its best in soliciting additional assistance to help Government alleviate
the sufferings of the people occasioned by the floods.
The
late Kofi Annan was a top-notch Ghanaian International Diplomat who held the UN
prestigious-job from 1997 to 2006 during which time, he brought a lot of goodwill
to Ghana as his native-country. He was the Founder and Chairman of the Kofi
Annan Foundation.
The
late Mr. Annan was Born in Kumasi on 8th April, 1938 and died in Switzerland’s
city of Bern on 18th August, 2018 at age 80 years after a short illness.
