HEALTH SERVICE DELIVERY RECEIVES BOOST IN BUILSA SOUTH 10th Sept., 2019

Efforts by health authorities in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region, have been given a boost with the commissioning of a newly constructed Community-based Health Planning and Services [CHPS] compound in the area. The CHPS is a national strategy in Ghana to deliver essential community-based health services with a primary focus on deprived communities.

At a brief ceremony this Tuesday to commission the CHPS compound in the Pentengsa Community of the district, Upper East Regional Minister Miss Tangoba Abayage, was glad that such a facility had been built in the community owing to the important services it was scheduled to render. She noted that the full operationalisation of the CHPS compound will save people in the area a lot of time they hitherto had to trek to neigbouring communities for their basic health needs.

The commissioning of the health facility marked the resumption of the minister’s region-wide tours started on 3rd September, 2019. The tours will take her to all districts across the Upper East region in order to ascertain for herself, the progress of development projects being undertaken in the various districts. She was particularly happy that the facility would bring a big relief to women especially, those pregnant, the aged and children whom she described as those in most need as far as, accessibility to health facilities was concerned.

According to the Regional Minister, one major reason accounting for the high records of maternal and infant mortalities in the rural areas of the country, was as a result of lack of quality health service delivery points. She therefore called on the chiefs and opinion leaders as well as community members in Pentengsa to see the CHPS compound as their own and hence, assist in maintaining it at all times. She also appealed for support for the health staff in the discharge of their duties which ultimately goes to benefit the local people.

Miss Abayage pledged to liaise with the District Assembly, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, to ensure that medicines were provided, the required medical equipment installed and other essential logistics provided for  the facility to run at full capacity as soon as practicable. She however urged community members to patronise the services of the facility as against indulging in self-medication or going to quacks.

The CHPS compound comprises several units including a reproductive cum child health [RCH] outfit, an out-patient department [OPD] and a maternity unit with a labour room attached.

Miss Abayage and her team also inspected ongoing works on a 1,000 metric tone ware house and a newly constructed slaughter house in the Baasa community which has since been roofed and fenced but awaiting interior furnishing.

The second district of call for the regional minister in the day, was the twin district of Builsa North where she was led by authorities of the Sandema Senior High School to inspect work on a 20-room boy’s dormitory estimated to house about 200 students on completion. The building had reached roofing level at the time of the visit.

Miss Abayage also had a look at a multipurpose business resource centre under construction in the Sandema township which had been roofed, while she inspected works on a one-storey police headquarters also in Sandema town. She was visibly happy with the spread of development across districts in the region but cautioned against the practice where so many contracts were awarded to a single contractor stressing that, such instances often slow down work and project completion targets, missed.

Meanwhile on her last stop in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, the minister was taken on a tour of redevelopment works being done at the Navrongo Sports Stadium where she inspected the media station, dressing and wash rooms among other sections. The contract was awarded in March 2018 and was to be completed within nine months but though behind schedule, the contractor gave the assurance that, all works will be completed by December, 2019. The stadium per FIFA standards, has a 5,000 seater capacity.
