SCHOOLS IN KNM RECEIVE EDUCATION LOGISTICS 10th Sept., 2019

Some selected basic schools within the Kassena-Nankana Municipality are earmarked to receive 30 desktop computers each and their accessories in the coming weeks as the management of the Assembly takes steps to ensure that, learning in the area of Information and Communication Technology [ICT] was enhanced in schools in the area.

The Municipal Chief Executive [MCE], Hon. William Aduum disclosed this on Tuesday when his municipality had its turn in hosting the Upper East regional minister on her inspection tours to all districts in the region. He further disclosed that, the beneficiary schools including, Pungyoro Junior High School, Doba Junior High School and another one whose name wasn’t readily available, were selected among the lot after the Assembly had taken quick action to qualify them through a set criterion.

According to Hon. Aduum, the presentation of the computers was coming under a partnership with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic communications [GIFEC] to help promote ICT teaching and learning in schools in Ghana. He revealed that, GIFEC had set some basic requirements that needed to be met before a school could benefit some of these being that, a school had to be connected to the national electricity grid while it ought to have specially designed computer tables and chairs to match. He announced with a smiling look that, his Assembly had since done all these with dispatch and was now awaiting the arrival of the package for onward distribution to the aforementioned schools.

The MCE stated that, after the successful supply and installation of the computers and a certificate of satisfaction gotten from the GIFEC authorities, there would be a scale up of the package to additional schools within the municipality.

Hon. Aduum also revealed that, the Kassena-Nankana Municipality had made tremendous strides in improving education across the municipality as it had distributed 350 pieces of dual desks to some selected schools in the area in 2018. He hinted that, the Assembly had initiated plans to procure and distribute as many as 1,100 metal desks this year for further distribution to schools that were in dire need of such educational logistics.

Upper East Regional Minister, Miss Tangoba Abayage who witnessed the presentation of the newly procured computer desks to authorities of the Ghana Education Service, called for adherence to a strict culture of maintenance of school property as that would prolong the life span of logistics that government usually spends so much money to procure. She therefore decried the phenomenon where heads of schools and various school management committees often look on unconcerned, as minor problems such as fixing hanging classroom windows and doors to mending slightly-broken furniture were left to degenerate into total wreckage.

The Regional Minister charged teachers and school administrators to focus on the total upbringing of pupils including checking truant behaviours especially during school hours as such acts often cause destruction to school property.

Meanwhile in a related development, Hon. Abayage had visited two schools in the Builsa South District earlier in the day to welcome first time pupils to primary class one and kindergarten [KG] class one to mark the annual “My First Day At School” event. The schools were the Gbedema Primary and KG and the Fumbisi Preparatory Primary school and KG. At the Gbedema School for instance, 22 boys were admitted to primary one while girls were 19. The school’s KG also received 12 fresh boys and 18 girls.

At each school, Miss Abayage distributed free school uniform to the pupils, exercise books with  pencils, sharpeners and erasers as well as assorted soft drinks and biscuits as a sign of encouragement to them.

She encouraged parents to invest in the education of their wards describing it as “the best investment anybody can ever make in this life”. She stressed that since the Nana Addo-led government had successfully rolled out the free Senior High School programme, it now behoved parents to ensure that their children passed through a successful basic education so as to be able to enjoy the free SHS.
