ZEBILA DISTRICT HOSPITAL, OTHERS GET NEW MATERNITY BLOCKS 4TH SEPT., 2019

A newly constructed 40-bed maternity ward has been commissioned and handed over to authorities of the Zebila District Hospital in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region to help augment health facilities at the hospital.

Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Tangoba Abayage did the commissioning this Wednesday on the second day of her region-wide tours to all districts in the region. At a brief ceremony to officially cut tape to commission and hand over the facility, she remarked that the new maternity ward was “an impressive project” with units such as delivery rooms, waiting rooms, a neo-natal unit, a nurses’ bay, a general ward within it and as many as, 10 water closet toilets and baths for the comfort of pregnant women who call in to be delivered.

Hon. Abayage noted that the new and spacious maternity ward was very gender-friendly as compared to many such wards she had seen at other places. She added that the block will ultimately ease the pressure on the old maternity ward, reduce congestion and also create a conducive working atmosphere for the health staff to carry out their duties to their patients.

The hospital’s Head of Accounts, Mr. Stephen Akugre who took the minister and her team on a guided tour of the facility, commended government for the project saying that, it had brought a big relief to authorities of the hospital as there was no way they could construct it on their own. He however appealed to the minister for the immediate furnishing of the ward and installation of essential equipment.

In her response to this plea, Hon. Abayage gave the assurance that as government was minded to put up the structure in the first place, it would equally do everything possible to equip it accordingly. She however remarked; “I keep saying this, that government can’t do it alone, that’s why I call on the business community to come in to support by way of corporate social responsibility while philanthropic individuals can also bring in their support”. To the minister, health is everybody’s business and all must support the hospital to become more effective in discharging its mandate to citizens in the area.

The minister and her team also inspected some 60 market stores at the Zebila central market which were awaiting distribution among traders and other business owners in the district. She also inspected a completed storm drain in the township which was meant to create a safe passage for flood waters so as not to destroy property during heavy rains.

Meanwhile much earlier in the day, Hon. Abayage was in the Pusiga District where she had interactions with the Assembly’s management and staff and was later led by the district chief executive to inspect projects there. These included a 1,000 metric tonne ware house right beside the Assembly’s offices and two separate 10-bed capacity maternity wards at the Pusiga Health Centre and at the Kulungugu Health Centre which were both left with about 15 percent of finishing works to complete.

Stalled business resource centre in Bawku
A one storey business resource centre in the Bawku Municipality was also inspected as part of the day’s rounds. This project, the minister
was briefed, started in 2018 but yet to complete. Madam Abayage was not too happy with the stalled project and directed management of the Assembly to follow up on the contractor and consultants to the project and to give her updates as soon as possible for the needed action to be taken.
