FIGHTING COVID-19; PREZ NANA ADDO ANNOUNCES PARTIAL LOCKDOWN 15th March, 2020
Ghana’s President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the closure of all universities, Senior High Schools as well as all basic schools both public and private with effect from tomorrow Monday 16th March, 2020.
This follows a marginal rise in the COVID-19 cases in the country from the two [2] officially announced by Ghana's Health Minister Thursday, 12thbMarch, 2020, to six [6] by close of day Sunday 15th March, 2020.
The President’s directive which came in a live television broadcast around 22:02GMT, also freezes all public gatherings such as rallies, demonstrations and religious cum other worship congregations whilst private only funerals are allowed but restricted to numbers not exceeding 25.
Additionally, shopping malls, hotels, super markets and office set ups including the public and civil service are permitted to continue working but charged to heighten their hand sanitising efforts among other precautions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the President added that schools will remain closed "till further notice", he stressed that the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication has been tasked to roll out distance modules to fill in the gap that woud be occasioned as a result. He however said candidates for this Basic Certificate Examinations [BECE] and the West Africa Senior High School Examinations [WASSCE] would be allowed to attend to school to prepare for their exams but with strict observance of social distancing protocols among the student and teachers populations.
President Nana Addo also reiterated that the Government of Ghana travel advisory issued earlier remained unchanged and must be observed as such. He added in the broadcast that the Ministry of Transport has also been directed to partner the various organisations to ensure that there were multiplication of the pandemic via the offer of transport service to the commuting public.
