GHANA’S PRIORITY NOW IS ECONOMIC EMANCIPATION – BONGO DCE 6th March, 2020
The District Chief Executive [DCE] for the Bongo District in
the Upper East Region, Hon. Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga has stated that, the
aspirations of Ghana today were no longer that of freedom from colonialism. He
added that, the country’s founding fathers – “the big six” with the instrumentality
of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, freedom fighters, the chiefs and people around
the 1950s and a bit earlier, were confronted with the need for political
emancipation and freedom from the colonial masters and thus, fought for exactly
that.
The DCE who was addressing school children at the district’s
celebration of Ghana’s 63rd Independence Anniversary under the theme
“Consolidating Our Gains” emphasised that, as a country “we are today more
concerned about economic emancipation, social development, moral sanctity,
quality education, promotion of peace and unity among others”. He noted however
that, the achievement of all these will be largely dependent on how well and
effectively, the current and future generations of the country play their roles
as responsible citizens.

The DCE told the students “you are here not only to
participate in the march-past, but to draw inspiration from what our founding
fathers and the current generation have done to secure a peaceful country for
us all”. Though he admitted that the country still had some challenges
regarding education, health, housing, water and sanitation among other
essential areas, the country could only overcome all these and more, through
the generation of enough revenues locally and making very judicious use of every
resource.
According to him, the Nana Addo led-administration has
committed itself to leading a transformational agenda that is geared towards
making Ghana a self-sustaining nation by strengthening the foundation of the
country’s economy and building on the giant gains already made. He mentioned
the industrialisation policy of “One District, One Factory”, the agric
development policy of “One Village, One Dam” as well as the “Planting for Food
and Jobs” programme as targeted at the rapid development of the country. He
therefore charged citizens in the district and elsewhere in Ghana, to safeguard
the achievements the country had made across all sectors of the economy so that
additional developmental strides could be hinged on these foundations into the
future.
Touching on this year’s theme for the independence
anniversary “Consolidating Our Gains”, Hon. Ayinbisa noted that, the theme requires
that Ghana develops her human resource which would then trigger a soaring
national productivity. This he further noted, also calls for quality education
which does not only enlighten people but also serves as an important tool for
fighting poverty and securing the lives of future generations. He said it was
on this background that, the current government did everything possible to
succeed in implementing the Free Senior High School Programme and gave the
strongest assurance that, nothing can push government to ever truncate the
programme.
In all, a total of 25 Primary Schools, 25 Junior High Schools
and nine Senior High Schools as well as three contingents of cadet corps from
the Gowrie, Zorkor and Bongo Senior High Schools took part in the colourful independence
parade and march-past. Aside the cadet corps, each of the participating schools
presented 30 students and two teachers for the parade.
Meanwhile other civil society organisations, artisans associations and other social and business groupings also partook in the march-past.
