The
numbers of Ghanaians in the Builsa South and Builsa North districts of the
Upper East Region turning up to register for their inclusion in Ghana’s new
electoral roll for the 2020 general elections as being conducted by the
Electoral Commission [EC], have been improving over the days since the

This
came to light when Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Tangoba Abayage paid
monitoring tours to some selected registration centres this Wednesday across
the two districts. At her first stop few minutes to noon at the Kasiesa Primary
School registration centre near Fumbisi in the Builsa South District, the
Registration Officer [R.O] Mr. Dominic Abudem reported that, some 24 persons
got registered by close of yesterday. Meanwhile, the officer added that as of
the time of the minister’s visit, a total of 247 people had been registered.
Hon.
Abayage was impressed with the EC’s adherence to the COVID-19 safety protocols at
the centre but enquired if the officers had faced some challenges to which, the
R.O replied that some 40 people though in the cue, could not be registered the
previous day because the equipment ran slow at the data capturing stage. He
said, the affected persons were given numbers and given special attention at
the start of the day’s registration.
The
Regional Minister who also doubles as the Parliamentary Candidate for the
Navrongo Central Constituency on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party
[NPP] in this year’s general elections, then set off for the Builsa South
District office of the EC where she was briefed on the registration exercise so
far. District Electoral Officer, Madam Judith Atika Wusah disclosed that a
total of 3,178 Ghanaians got successfully registered at the close of phase one of
the exercise whilst as of yesterday, the seventh day [only two days into the second
phase], the overall total number registered stood at 4,239.
The
District Electoral Officer revealed that the Fumbisi Constituency at the last
Ghanaian general elections held in 2016, had a total voter population of 21,278
and estimates that, the number may likely go up as some citizens would have
attained the constitutional voting age over the period.
At
her third and last stop in the district, EC officials at the Naadema Primary
School registration centre reported that the centre had recorded a total of 266
potential voters. Giving the breakdown, registration supervisor of the exercise
Mr. Ali Alikali disclosed that 97 persons registered on Monday, 104 persons got
registered yesterday and at the time the minister arrived, 65 citizens had
registered.
The
Regional Minister’s tour in the day ended in the Builsa North District where
she was led by the District Chief Executive, Hon. David Afoko to inspect the
registration at some two centres namely; Zuedem which had recorded a total of
244 registrations from this Monday through to today, Wednesday while on other
hand the Kpalinsa Primary School Centre had a total of 195 people on its records. At the
time of the minister’s visit by 13:35 GMT, the former had recorded 62
registrants while the latter had recorded only 42 people.
The
minister ended the Builsa North tour at the EC’s district office where she
sought answers as to why at almost all the registration centres visited, the
EC’s lamination officers did not have a prescribed roller for the proper
lamination of the voter ID cards but rather used implements such as a pair of
scissors in the lamination process. In his response, the District Electoral
Officer Mr. Mohammed Sherifdeen Alhassan was surprised at the absence of the
lamination tool and insisted that every registration kit dispatched to the
field was fully furnished and pledged to immediately look into the anomaly.
The
EC officer expressed optimism that the numbers of registrants will further
improve as the days run by and that, targets set may even slightly go up by
close of the whole exercise. He disclosed that the first seven days of the
exercise which marked phase one of the registration, produced a total of 4,019
qualified voters and that yesterday’s exercise alone had also recorded 786
registrants. He revealed that the constituency had a little over 32,000 voters
at the 2016 general elections and observed that with the smooth conduct of the
current registration, the number could go a bit upwards.
