BONGO DISTRICT BENEFITS FROM PRODUCTIVE SAFETY NET PROGRAM 6th NOV., 2020

 About 61,000 farmers have been supplied with 78 thousand cashew seedlings under the climate change component of the Ghana Productive Safety Net Programme in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region. The project, being implemented by the Department of Agriculture aims at strengthening safety net systems for extremely poor households as well as mitigating the negative impact of climate change, creating employment for the rural masses and providing the necessary raw materials for the 1-District 1-Factory initiative.

The Bongo District Chief Executive [DCE], Hon. Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga who made these disclosures in his keynote address at the 36th National Farmers’ Day celebration, also observed that the agricultural sector will be more resilient if the full potential of the annual dry season period is harnessed effectively to ensure an all-year round farming scheme.  He further indicated that, four dams of appreciable capacities have been successfully constructed in the Goo, Kuyelingo, Kodorogo and Sambologo communities among other areas under the government’s 1-Village, 1-Dam policy to serve as a catalyst for farmers to ply their trade throughout the year.

This year’s farmers’ day event under the theme, “Agribusiness Development under COVID-19, Challenges and Opportunities” was held in the Lungo community.

For his part, the District Director of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Edgar Dra urged farmers to identify a comparative advantage commodity where they can involve other stakeholders to add value to the commodity in order to increase their profits. He also advised the district’s farmers to make efforts to find and sign agreements with companies that would offer good prices for farm produce and make available to them, quality inputs. The Director assured the farmers that whether they were getting inputs on credit or on cash basis, his office was always ready to assist and to give technical direction to them.

In all, some 22 farmers, farmers’ support groups and Agriculture Extension Officers received various awards while the prestigious District Best Farmer award was conferred on Mr. Akantuge Adongo David who hails the Lungo community. His prize package included a brand new Apsonic Motor tricycle, a radio set, several yards of cloth, a knapsack sprayer and a pair of wellington boots.

Portions of the citation for his prize said he had 13 acres of maize, 21 acres of groundnuts, 25 acres of rice and 215 fowls. He also had 38 turkeys, 86 cattle, 140 goats, three acres of oil palm and two acres of banana among many others.

The first runner up award went to Mr. Bukari Abass Atuah from Dua Yikene with a new motor bike as his top price among other items while Mr. Ernest Asanpandaa Azure from Kuyelingo emerged as the second runner up. Others who also picked awards included Akologo Ayampoka from Kabre - best innovative adoptor in climate change, Apiriyoe Thomas from Daboya - best community animator and Atanga Alice from Feo as best innovator in nutritious food.

The District Best Physically Challenged Farmer award was chalked by Mr. Adua Atinga of the Beo Kanbusigo community.

A day’s training workshop for the roll out of a pending nation-wide public education and sensitization campaign on the Single Window Citizens Engagement Service [SWCES], has taken place in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, this Thursday, February 15, 2024. The training workshop was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection [MoGCSP] in collaboration with the Information Services Department [ISD]. OVER 10 PROJECT SITES HANDED OVER TO CONTRACTORS IN KWD UNDER SOCO 19th NOV., 2023

A number of sites earmarked for the construction of several projects ranging from market stalls, CHPS compounds, Culverts, mechanized boreholes to a butcher shop and more, have been handed over to contractors for execution across several communities in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.
